This open-back headphone is beloved by audiophiles for its musical, non-fatiguing sound while still offering intimate levels of detail. Imaging your Imagination

The HD 650’s signature sound starts with our in-house acoustics. Audiophiles know that the best components perform at their peak when nothing stands in their way. It’s no surprise that the response and dimensional soundstage of the HD 650 are smooth—its open earcups provide each and every soundwave ample room to expand as they would in nature. The 42mm transducer deploys a 38mm diaphragm with aluminum voice coil specifically tuned for extended, critical listening: overall treble and low-frequency presence are effortless while midrange is reproduced with lifelike composure—none sacrificing their organic roots to get there. Modern high-resolution sample rates benefit especially well from the HD 650’s willingness to reveal subtle nuances without resorting to over-hyping the treble range. Each transducer manufactured is measured against rigid specifications and paired with a perfect match for consistent representation of the entire frequency spectrum in both channels. By reducing variances between left and right channels, the headphone reproduces mastering-grade sound independent of room acoustics or loudspeaker positioning.

    Outstanding sound quality!

I purchased the Sennheiser HD-650's in 2009, as my first ever audiophile headphones. The HD-650's were introduced in 2003 to high critical praise. Excellent frequency response, channel separation, low distortion, spatial quality and detail. The HD-650's are well known and liked among audiophiles. For headphones with such unusually large drivers, the HD-650's are surprisingly comfortable, due to headband design and circumaural drivers with soft velour ear cushions. The HD-650's provide outstanding sound quality and can be worn comfortably for hours on end. The exceptionally large channel separation and detail of these headphones are best suited for classical, jazz and acoustic music. With a high impedance of 300 ohms, the HD-650's are designed for home audio gear. They can be used with high quality portable gear, such as iPods, using a high performance portable audio amplifier. Excellent sound quality on the go can be achieved using the line output jack of an iPod or high quality portable Blu-Ray/DVD player and high performance portable (battery operated) audio amplifier. Best audio performance is achieved with lossless digital music files and line out connections. Only highly experienced audiophiles will find weaknesses with the HD-650's, as listening preferences are always subjective, including those for audiophiles. Above this price point, the improvements become smaller, with increasing prices. The HD-650's represent an excellent value for the money (sound quality versus price). To most people, who love music and demand comfort and excellent sound quality, the HD-650's will not disappoint.

    Absolute quality!

I have just had these headphones and to be truthful, they are just getting better! I'm not even kidding, they are outstanding. They can be used with portable devises depending on how powerful it is because these are monsters. I'm not going to give a hige paragragh but I just want to say these are just perfect! Comfortable, stylish and easily to get going. The one bad point that I have is that they don't come with a carry case but if you are not planning on going out then this isn't a problem and I know that you can pick one up for as little as £25 so no big deal. Bottom line is that they are beautiful.

    Smooth, relaxed sound and comfort

The 650 is my go-to HP for a relaxed, warm sound signature, without any harsh treble. Great for classical, jazz vocals, rock, and acoustic. Strings sound lush on these, and brass is sweet with no harshness. Sounds great out of an iPod Classic connected to a portable amp. But with a desktop amp, and a good digital source, I am in audiophile heaven. Amazing headphones, and very comfy too. Ach, Himmel! Highly recommended.

FAQ

  • What amplifiers are recommended for Sennheiser headphones?

    • Other than recommending the Sennheiser HDVD 800 and HDVA 600 amplifiers for our high end audiophile headphones we do not provide amplifier recommendations because there are simply too many factors (including cost, features, etc) that need to be accounted for when choosing an amplifier.

For amplifier recommendations Sennheiser suggests that our customers check out this headphone forum (www.head-fi.org) where the moderators and member test a variety of different amplifiers of varying costs and features and can provide feedback on how the different amplifiers perform under different circumstances.

  • What is the difference between "open" and "closed" ear cups on headphones?

    • What is the difference between "open" and "closed" ear cups on headphones?
With Sennheiser headphones the audio will always be accurate and responsive and is sure to please no matter what situation you need it for.

An open (sometimes referred to as "open aire" headphone is one that uses some external airspace to reproduce life-like audio within the ear-cup. Think of it as having premium speakers next to your ears that you can control the volume for with extreme precision. The trade-off is that at extreme volumes some sound will leak out. Some of our "open aire" models include the HD 800, HD 700, HD 650, HD 600, HD 598, HD 558 and HD 518.

A closed headphone isolates you from your environment and vice-versa (ie: the sound is contained within the headphones). This is perfect for critical listening or a situation where you do not want to disturb/be disturbed. Some of our "closed" models include the MOMENTUM, Urbanite XL, HD 380 PRO, HD 280 PRO, HD 449 and HD 439.
